What Am I?
Mark Renz photo and words
I am a 500,000 year-old peccary mandible, from the family Tayassuidae
and the genus/species Platygonus cumberlandensis.
I was found a few years back by the long and lanky bonesmith Mark Renz, in a highway retention pond
in LaBelle. This specimen was turned over to the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville,
and is now on permanent loan at the Clewiston Museum.
Peccaries still live in the American Southwest (javelinas) and Central and South America.
